Isobel Loftus is a UK based textile designer-maker. Her expertise lies in textile design-development: using stitch to manipulate the surface of materials in the creation of new and innovate textiles. She is inspired by the beauty of the natural world; seasonal colours, plants, flowers and the landscape. She records her observations by making sketches and mixed-media collage compositions. These are interpreted in to textiles by creating material and stitch samples. A careful and resourceful use of materials is integral to her process.
Her practice embraces the history and traditions of quilt making, and explores the possibilities of pattern, contrast, and the interaction of colour. The challenge is to make a beautiful fabric from limited materials. As she stitches through the layers of fabric she builds a unique cloth which can be used and loved, generation after generation.
Isobels one-off works encompass those for exhibition as well as bespoke textiles for interiors and privately commissioned pieces.
She studied B.A. (Hons) Textile & Fashion Design at Manchester, specialising in embroidered textiles. She has a long career as a teacher of Textile Design and Visual Studies.
